March 9, 2021, 5:30 a.m. Joliet- Today, Illinois’ highest profile Latino elected leader weighed in on Joliet’s historic city council race. Representative Jesús “Chuy” García endorsed Joliet City Council at-large candidate, Cesar Guerrero, in his bid to become Joliet’s only Latinx city councilor. The endorsement comes as the Guerrero for Joliet campaign continues to fight for water affordability and equitable representation in Illinois’ third largest city.

“Every community deserves to be represented by people from their own community who can stand up and represent their collective needs,” said Rep García. “With approximately 50,000 Latinx residents, but without a single Latinx representative on the Joliet City Council, I am proud to support Cesar Guerrero in his bid to gain that representation for his community. As Vice Chair of the House Committee on Natural Resources and member of the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, I look forward to working with Cesar Guerrero to ensure equitable access to clean drinking water for all of Joliet’s working families and to make sure Joliet, along with the rest of the region, acts as a good steward of our freshwater resources.”

“It’s hard to overstate the significance of the Congressman’s endorsement,” said Guerrero. “As the leading figure in the struggle for Latinx representation in Chicagoland, ‘Chuy García’ has always been a household name in my community. To have his support in this pivotal race is incredibly uplifting. I look forward to working with Congressman García on creating a culture of equity and inclusion in Joliet city government.”

This endorsement is the latest promising sign for the young candidate who has shaken up the field with a successful push for water affordability legislation (link) that has attracted hundreds of supporters in the span of just a few weeks. The endorsement by Congressman García joins the endorsement by Congresswoman Marie Newman as the latest high profile endorsement in the Joliet city council race as the April 6th election nears. Progressive groups have rallied to his candidacy with endorsements by the Illinois Nurses Association, Will County Progressives, Our Revolution, and the Warehouse Workers Organizing Committee.
