The Sunrise Movement is a youth movement to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process. They’re building an army of young people to make climate change an urgent prioirty across America, end the corrupting influence of fossil fuel executives on our politics, and elect leaders who stand up for the health and wellbeing of all people.

February 18, 2021, Joliet -- The Guerrero for Joliet campaign continues to pick up steam with another major endorsement. This time from environmental group, The Sunrise Movement, whose Joliet hub announced its endorsement of the campaign today.

“We find ourselves at a critical juncture in Joliet. Year after year our water becomes less affordable and our air becomes less breathable. Working families struggle to get by on less and less as our lived environment crumbles around us. No place has more to gain from a Green New Deal than cities like Joliet. A green industrial revolution would put our people back to work in high paying jobs while guaranteeing access to affordable clean water and fresh air for our people,” said Guerrero. “Our detractors would have you believe that a clean and prosperous world is a pipe dream. I’m here to tell you that it’s good and responsible public policy.”

“Joliet has persistent issues when it comes to our water, our air, and our infrastructure, all factors playing a huge role in the lives and livelihoods of our community members,” said Devin Cooley, Sunrise Joliet coordinator. “A lot of people underestimate the power of taking action at a local level, but there are communities across the nation on the front lines of pushing sustainable initiatives to improve their micro environment. That’s why it’s so important to have leaders like Cesar Guerrero in place to help set the standard for other public servants. We call on Joliet’s youth and the community as a whole to support this campaign in any way they can and help make history on April 6.”

This endorsement comes as the Guerrero for Joliet campaign continues to circulate a petition for an immediate price cap on clean drinking water that has garnered over 227 signatures so far. With water prices set to skyrocket to at least $138/month over the next few years, the issue of equitable access to the region’s most precious resources has taken on particular importance.

The Joliet City Council race is set to conclude on April 6 and a successful campaign by Guerrero would make him the only Latino representative on the City Council, as well as the first Latino elected to an open seat in a city-wide election. This endorsement joins the growing list which include the Illinois Nurses Association, the Will County Progressives, Our Revolution, and the Warehouse Workers Organizing Committee.
