Founded in 1901, the Illinois Nurses Association (INA), is the state’s oldest and largest nurse’s union and represents over a thousand nurses at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Joliet

February 4, 2021, Joliet -- First time candidate Cesar Guerrero secured a major endorsement from the Illinois Nurses Association (INA) this week. The endorsement comes at a pivotal time in the Joliet Open Seat City Council race as he races to become the first Latino to win an open seat in the city’s history.

“The nurses at Saint Joseph’s hospital have always been heroes to our community. Since the pandemic, they’ve stepped up like never before to keep our community safe,” said Guerrero. “It’s unfortunate some at Amita Health don’t appreciate how much our nurses have given and refuse to support them with the safe patient ratios they need to take care of Joliet’s families. As city councilor, I will show that Joliet stands with its nurses and will make sure Amita Health abides by the contract agreed to this past summer.”

“This past summer we went on strike to make sure Amita Health was equipping us to be able to provide the best care for our patients with safe staffing ratios and working conditions. Frankly, we were disappointed by the response by some on the City Council,” said INA PAC chair, Paul Pater. “We decided it’s time for a fresh voice that isn’t afraid to stand with unions like ours when we strike for a better workplace and a safer community. We are proud to endorse Cesar and believe he has what it takes to stand up for what’s right in Joliet.”

This endorsement is the latest promising sign for the young candidate who had a strong start to the race with a robust field operation that secured over sevent times the number of required ballot petitions, the most of any of the 12 candidates in the race. His endorsement by the Illinois Nurses Association is his latest and highest profile endorsement to date as the April 6th election nears. Progressive groups have rallied to his candidacy with early endorsements by the Will County Progressives, Our Revolution, the Warehouse Workers Organizing Committee and Working Families Joliet.
